Hedge Fund Replication: One of the Hottest, Most Controversial Topics in Finance Today

Geneva, Switzerland (PRWeb) March 15, 2007 -- Top consultant and journalist Pierre Saint-Laurent covers EDHEC's Asset Management Days in Geneva this week for All About Alpha. On Tuesday, he attended EDHEC's much anticipated presentation on hedge fund replication.

The session assembled researchers Noël Amenc, Jean-Christophe Meyfredi, François-Serge Lhabitant and Walter Géhin to present EDHEC's latest research on hedge fund replication, discussed yesterday in All About Alpha's exclusive interview of Prof. Lionel Martellini, one of the authors of the study. EDHEC's asset management and risk research group is an industry leader in applied research in alternative investments and risk management. It produces the EDHEC hedge fund indices. Other top industry participants joined the EDHEC group on a panel to discuss.

The EDHEC research shows that hedge fund replication- synthetically reproducing hedge fund returns with lower fees, higher transparency and better liquidity- is not well-established. By analyzing existing research (such as Harry Kat's famous payoff distribution approach) and reproducing previous analysis, researchers show that the quality of the replications is relatively low. This casts some doubts on the ability to deliver hedge fund replication products that perform as expected. EDHEC cautions that it does not have a definitive view on the subject and that further modeling and research is both required and will be helpful in improving the quality of hedge fund replication products.
